Skylights on Green Roofs
A green roof is an extension of an above grade roof, built on top of a human-made structure, that allows vegetation to grow in a growing medium. A green roof assembly includes, as a minimum, a root repellent system, a drainage system, a filtering layer, a growing medium and plants, and shall be installed on a waterproof membrane of an applicable Roof.
A skylight can be installed in this type of roofing system as well.

A new addition was being added onto this home in Rosedale. The homeowners wanted to have lots of natural light, as well as good ventilation. A large opening was created for an A-frame system. <br />

With the new high efficiency skylights and the green roof completed, this home ends up with a much smaller carbon footprint and a much more comfortable second story. The vegetation and growing medium reduce a great amount of the sun’s heat from being absorbed into the home’s roof structure and the new skylights reduce the heat gain inside the home. Also, because one of the skylights can open it allows the hot air in the house to exhaust (by a natural chimney effect), therefore, allowing the air conditioning to be much more effective upstairs. <br />
